Reintroducing the Kisan Charkha

There is perhaps nothing else in a hand-spinner’s life that speaks of self-reliance more than a kisan charkha does. This yarn-spinning wheel is a small, simple, and rather basic contraption hugely popular during the Gandhian era, which helps a spinner spin their yarn right in the comforts of their homes. However, given the elementary nature of this wheel, the kisan charkha has made way for newer, faster, and more cost and energy efficient machines which spin yarn at speeds a hand-spinner cannot match up to on a regular basis. The shift in the nature of the yarn has also brought about a change in the approach of the weaver, many of whom lost their livelihoods to countless machines.

But, the kisan charkha, while characteristic of being stuck in a time warp, brings with it what no machine can – a human touch to the textile industry which sets premium hand spun yarn apart from mass-produced yarn.
Bun.Kar Bihar aims at helping spinners recreate and relive the magic that their fingers were perhaps born to create. The seed which was planted to revive the hopes, skills, and livelihood of one spinner, has now blossomed into a beautiful community of spinners who work on their kisan charkhas and produce premium hand spun yarn for Bun.Kar Bihar’s textile range, today.
