Surface Ornamentation
Bun.Kar Bihar prides itself in promoting that which the state of Bihar is celebrated for in the world of textiles – its traditional embroideries namely Sujni, and Applique and Khatwa.
Applique is a specialised form of needlework where cut pieces of fabric are stitched artfully on to the primary fabric being worked on, to create appealing images, stories, or even designs. Not only does this add extra ornamentation to the fabrics being stitched, but also allows for the embroiderer to use this form of craft as a means of story-telling; something that is very dear to the cause of community development in the Foundation.
In line with the above, comes another form of embroidery called Sujni, a traditional quilting technique. The traditional Sujni used layers of fabric softened by use, stitched together with patterns formed by a running stitch, which is then filled in with a denser count of stitches to complete the design.
Still under the archaic and unyielding grasp of patriarchy, many embroiderers, especially women, find that they are unable to leave the confines of their own homes. As if stuck in a time warp that refuses to budge, women often spend most of their lives being unaware of the latent talent and craftsmanship that lies within them because of this callous oppression. Overpowered by patriarchal ways, a large section of women never see the light of financial independence or even a job in the rural setting. However, with a cautious but driven approach of reaching out to the heart of this raw talent, Bun.Kar Bihar has been able to empower women to use their skills without having to leave home. These beautiful embroidery skills are potent enough to allow a woman to not just earn herself a few bucks, but to also tell the world all the stories that often remain silenced in her.
